Today Kindergarten had their 2nd art class and we got started on their very first project. It was relatively simple. They were able to finish it in one class which will is rare, and they really enjoyed it. Inspired by our school and reading theme decorations, I picked out a space themed project for everyone to start the year off with. Kindergarten made the moon. To start, I traced a circle on a blank paper and then photocopied it onto black construction paper to give the students a guide and to make sure everyone had a nice full moon. You would think left on their own kids would go big but I find that lots of times I want them to draw something big, they still end up being much smaller than my example. I made "moon paint" by mixing flour into white paint. You can use regular flour, but if you're worried about gluten in your classroom I found that Pamela's gluten-free flour works best (click on the photo below for the link) It's the most like regular flour I have found when cooking for my gluten-free (Celiac disease) son. The flour thickens the paint for them to create some nice texture on their moon surface. If time allowed they were able to stamp circles to look like craters. I used bottle caps for that. All in all the project was a success, it's clean-up time that we'll need to keep working hard on. ;-) I know the Kindergarten teachers thought I was crazy starting right off with paint, but art can be messy and they've got to use it sometime! I look forward to getting some of these up in our hallways when they're dry!
